End the Chapter on Family Homelessness!
Will you turn the page for our families?
As a longtime volunteer at Housing Families, I have seen hundreds of homeless children’s lives transformed – children like Sally* who was five years old and getting ready to start kindergarten.
As other children were excited to head off to school, Sally was feeling nervous and unsettled. Because Sally’s family had no permanent address, her entrance to kindergarten was complicated. Sally struggled with anxiety and was withdrawn. Her only friend was a stuffed animal, a constant companion as Sally’s family moved from place to place.
But once she and her family arrived at Housing Families, everything changed for the better.
Housing Families’ compassionate staff and volunteers helped Sally’s family write a new story. They now had an address so Sally could enroll in school. She and her family worked with Housing Families’ counselors to heal from the trauma caused by being without a home. With the help of case managers, her parents developed skills and learned about resources so that they never again would face homelessness.
As a tutoring volunteer I had the pleasure of reading stories to Sally. Sally grew more confident and learned the alphabet and numbers. She began to enjoy books. By the time spring arrived Sally was reading, doing simple math problems and more importantly, making friends with other children her age. Housing Families offered a place to go when her life was unstable. And story time became the best part of Sally’s day.
All of this is possible because of your support. Will you help turn the page for families like Sally’s? Your gift of any amount will help homeless families write a different chapter ensuring a happy and bright future. Thanks to you, when she grows up, Sally will be able to read bedtime stories to her own children in a home that is stable, warm, and inviting.
With much gratitude,
